I've recently seen the Audrey Tatou movie about Gabrielle Chanel's life before she became famous, so I thought I should do a post about her, a woman that refused to respect the strict dressing code of her time-an attitude that eventually brought her global recognition as an innovator and a true talent. I've included some photos from recent runway shows, because it can be seen that the style has remained the same for almost a century. If we have someone to thank for for women's emancipation, for sure it's her.

Design Week

It is a fabulous week here in Milan, mainly because Design Week is in full swing. Although, as I'm not a big shot furniture buyer/collector, I did not have the chance to participate at the exclusive parties organized by the most famed companies, I did however take some 5 hours to walk through the pavilions of the exposition. That I only had time to see the Young Designers section I do not regret, because, as can be seen in the pictures above, it was probably the most interesting part, where one could see funny, strange, but mostly brilliant and innovative ideas. I particularly like the bookshelf that's shaped like the city's underground system (top) .

Dining Rooms

Easter is drawing close, and since everyone seems to be spending it with their families (including yours truly), i thought that a post on dining rooms would be appropriate, since that's where the families gather. I personally really really like the blue table with the golden leaf on top, but I would never say no to a Scandinavian arrangement like the one in the top picture!

Feast your eyes on...The Propeller Island City Lodge, Berlin

These are just some pictures of the impressive Berlin hotel that is host to over 30 different rooms, each decorated in a....peculiar style. There is the upside-down room (first picture), the mirror room, the Hollywood room, the "padded cell"room (yes it's exactly what you think), the castle room (last picture, complete in a mini-golf course!), the prison cell room (you actually sleep in an imitation of a cell, and one of the walls has a hole in it), and many others equally freaky and creepy-like a room where the guests can sleep in coffins. Now i went to Berlin recently and I don't know when my next visit is going to be, but I really want to visit this place, it seems such an interesting experience!

Marie Antoinette's Hamlet

Now that spring has arrived and summer is on its way, I'm dreaming away about a wonderful existence in the hameau(hamlet) that was built at Versailles for Queen Marie Antoinette-right next to her Petit Trianon. Here is where she used to spend time with her ladies, away from the grand halls of the Palace, but in just as much luxury, no doubt. It was supposed to imitate a Normandy village, complete with a farm and a dairy, except all the animals where selected to be extremely docile and were washed so that the ladies could collect the milk and eggs in their porcelain containers with the Queen's monogram. The interiors of all these rustic buildings were furnished in the same style that they were accustomed to. I visited this place last year-the first two photos are actually mine-and I was so impressed with attention to detail that they put into this-they even planted special trees in special shapes and made the surroundings of the village look like a fairy-tale land.

I am a huge fan of big crystal chandeliers. My personal favourite is the Ballroom chandelier(of the French Hotel chandelier)-bottom. It's just so glamorous and it suggests such a grand atmosphere! I also love the Marie Therese chandeliers-second from top. The first image is taken from the Elle Decor blog-all those delicate chains make the "Willowlamp" look simply fascinating!

Since in my opinion Paris fashion week is always the most fabulous, here are some of my favorite outfits that could be seen on the catwalks in the French capital. Most designers made pieces that totally represent them-just look at chanel, balmain lanvin and co. But there's no doubts that the lugubrious clowns that the models at the mcqueen were turned into held the most fascination with their surrealist attire and oversized lips. Love'em.

I am in looove with dressing tables. They're just so ladylike, with all the beauty paraphernalia stacked on them, and these mirrored ones are just so elegant and special ! They can light up any room,but i really love how they look against a beige background with a thick beige rug, like in the top dressing room picture. I'm going to have to start looking for one !

Futurism Exhibition

Milan is the city that, at the beginning of the 20th century, saw the birth of futurism and thus was named "la cita' che sale"- "the city that climbs". Now, with approximately 400 works and occupying the whole ground floor of the Palazzo Reale, the exhibition includes paintings from before, during and after futurism, showing how it was influenced, how it grew and how, in turn, it influenced. Artists include F.T.Marinetti ( the founding father of the aesthetic movement that was futurism), Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Balla, Severini, Prampolini, Soffici, Sironi, Funi, Dudreville, and Fillia.

Ideas for beds

After seeing the post on daisypinkpcupcake about canopy beds, I remembered I really had to start looking for good ideas to re-do my bed at home. I'm thinking a full-on canopy would be too much, but I really really like the idea of mosquito netting done neatly, maybe using a pastel since my bed is beige and leaning to the side when there are no little bugs. I'm aiming for practical and pretty, and right now I'm simply in need of inspiring photos !

Here's some interesting news about Creativity Day, an event held in Milan on February 25th, made up of free courses and seminars on design, communication, photography, video and all other things in between: this year it will have more than 1000 participants and it will be centered around the idea "different thinking, different learning", inspired by the ongoing financial crisis. I've been thinking about this for a while and now that I have a little bit of free time on my hands, I'm gonna try to research the next subject....how dangerous are scented candles?
It's funny how something that was used in the past for practical purposes (very important source of light and sometimes even heat!) has remained a big industry even in our day and age.
As a frequent user of scented candles (you might even say i have a thing for them), I really enjoy the atmosphere that they can create and, obviously, the smell. But recently, I've become concerned with the danger that they might pose. Regardless of the price (and here there is a huuuge range-I should know), are we really paying for potential lung cancer? As scary as it sounds, I still haven't found the answer to that question, just some information and warnings for people with respiratory diseases-some candles might contain chemical substances that are harmful for them. In any case, beeswax candles are a safe alternative and if you want to create your own candles, head on down to http://www.candletech.com/, where you can find loads of recipes for soaps and candles.

I just received an e-mail that got me all excited: the new Christian Louboutin website is finally finished ! I rushed to the see it (www.christianlouboutin.com) and was so impressed that I decided I had to write about it. The "crazy nature" themed site is so cool, you almost forget that you're actually there for the shoes, complete with a green-eyed, elf-eared Mr.Louboutin, chicken and a lot of self-irony that's just delish ! But then you actually get to the juicy part: mouth-watering, outrageously high-heeled shoes. My personal favourite is the total madness collection, which includes shoes inspired by Marie Antoinette and 14-cm curve shoes designed for David Lynch's "Fetish" exhibition.
Which can only bring me to this next conclusion: you say shoes, I say....art !

Grand Antiques Market in Milan

I just found out about this: every last Sunday of the month (except for July), there is an important antiques market in Milan and it takes place in the area between the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals. More than 400 stands display their wares of antiques, bric-à-brac and other collectors items. Sounds like the perfect Sunday activity, especially now that spring is coming I'm going to check it out for sure!!

Well this is the first post, and I've gotta say it feels a bit weird, but after weeks spent obsessing about other people's blogs and trying to find the perfect picture of a porch, for example, I figured it was time for me to say "hey why not?" and totally went for it. I have to say I did not come up with the name for myself, I got the inspiration from two of my friends who frequently compare cheesy situations with excessively thick and sweet syrup, but since I have a thing for that kind of stuff, well you get the point.
What I'm going to try to do here is post as many interesting, fancy, artsy stuff about the city we live in, Milan, and the rest of space will be filled with interior design and other things that i love, so hold on to your horsies !
